â€Å"The students, united, will never be defeated! â€Å". This was the rallying call of students at San Francisco State University trying to save their Asian America Studies classes in 2008. 40 years after the first Third World Liberation Front protested and fought against discrimination and for their rights to have ethnic studies classes, the fight still continues. Students fought to have classes from the perspective of ethnic peoples, and not the Eurocentric point of view. In doing so, the struggle for ethnic studies from students and the community challenged and broke the status quo and construct of â€Å"race† in a Eurocentric America. Ethnic studies in the U. S. campuses started in the 60’s along with the Civil Rights Movement, opposition against the Vietnam War, the fight for women’s rights, and many other fights by the people for their rights. In March of 1968, The SFSU Third World Liberation Front was created by students of different ethnicities coming together. This was the longest strike in student history, and resulted in the creation of ethnic studies at SFSU, as well as increased admissions for students of colors to the university. The second longest strike occurred in UC Berkeley, with the strike more violent than the first. The clenched fist was the symbol for the strike, equality, power, unity, and change for the minority groups in America. Over the years, there have been many strikes and protest from students to have ethnic studies. California was a hotbed for the struggle of ethnic studies because it has the most immigrant and ethnic groups in the United States. It was a melting pot of African Americans, Asians, American Indians, Latinos, and so on. It was really only a matter of time before they stood up against discrimination. â€Å"When people of color got up in unity and went on strike, it scared them. † Them referring to the white political leaders of the schools. The first to stand up to discrimination is usually those that are educated and realize they can make a change through their actions. Students of ethnic background fought for social justice not only for themselves, but for a larger picture going back to their communities. Ethnic students are representatives to their families and communities. Many of these ethnic students were the first to attend college because their parents or families came to America in search for a better life and an opportunity for their children at an education. As these strikes were occurring, the community came to support them. Not only the communities of ethnic students, but white supporters as well. Supporters that understood the struggle of the ethnic groups, and came together to fight together. â€Å"Quite a few white students had come to the point of understanding, what our cause was, what it meant, and that we did not want to take over the university, take over the country, we wanted ends†. When we think third world we think of people that are improvised, poor, and lacking education. These third world people a Though they weren’t really â€Å"third world† students, inadequate access to classes that represented their ethnic background meant they had no way to really learn the struggle of ethnics people that came before them. Luis Alarcon made a point that he considered UC Berkeley his university, but the president of Berkeley disagreed and said the university was for â€Å"the people of California†. Although Luis is a person of California, the president did not consider the university for him. As a race of minorities, they were trying to free themselves from being â€Å"third world† citizens in the United States. â€Å"What we got from this agreement were things that we as third world peoples deserved, and we as students, and we as citizens of this country deserved†. But is there a scientific claim that makes certain people â€Å"third world†, or is it a political agenda to people ethnic people third world citizens? Ethnic people living in the United States in the were often discriminated against. As Laureen Chew said,† of course I blamed it all on ourselves and our family for being born Chinese, etc†. They blamed their race, instead of finding a fault in society for making them an inferior race that were mistreated unfairly. Even today, although racism is not as obvious, it is still alive and in place. â€Å"Color-blind racism serves as the ideological armor for a convert and institutionalized system in the post-Civil Rights era†. Minorities can be discriminated against their morals, values, and character without whites sounding racist. But is being color-blind discriminating as well? By not seeing color, one fails to recognize that we still haven’t reached a level where we only judge from character, and not the color of our skin. It’s apparent we today, have not reached that goal yet. Tom Horne Arizona superintendent of public instruction believes in cutting off ethnic studies classes because it will divide kids up and only teach them narrowly about the race they were born into. Ethnic studies is for the empowerment of not only ethnic students, but for all students who want to learn about the history of different peoples. It wasn’t so long ago when minorities were second citizens in the United States. Many were segregated against, beaten, killed, and uneducated. But what were the terms that classified certain peoples as a different race from whites? â€Å"Race is a concept with signifies and symbolizes social conflicts and interests by referring to different types of human bodies†. So because people of different ethnicities have different bodies, specifically skin color they were disadvantaged in comparison to white Americans. â€Å"The word ‘domination’ reminds us that the institutional racism is a type of power that encompasses the symbolic power to classify one group of people as ‘normal’ and other groups of people as ‘abnormal’, the political power to withhold basic rights from people of color and marshal the full power of the state to enforce segregation and in equality. To break this institution, learning ethnic studies brings out the truth of this country, which in turn brings out the greatness of the United States. Ethnic studies allows us to think critically about our relationship in terms of our relationship this country and our backgrounds. It gives us a basis to deal with historic racial issues such as the Zimmerman trial. â€Å"Ethnic studies departments in the CSU are at the forefront in leading students to balanced, critical, and open discussions of racial and ethnic matters that, unfortunately, have yet to be resolved in the US†. It’s important to have a format in educating students so that we may form our own educated opinions and learn facts on the history of our ethnicities. People gave up their bodies for their right to have ethnic studies. â€Å"I wanted to give you a poem, but I give you my body instead†. As she finished her speech, her fellow supporters agreed with her with loud applause. She was only one of many proponents in decades of struggle by students to fight for their ethnic studies departments. The protesting for ethnic studies was intertwined with the opposition against the war, civil rights, and other social issues going on at the time. In 1999 the issue was California becoming increasingly wary against immigrants, using them as a scapegoat for the economy failing. Protesting at Berkeley meant defending affirmative action, defending the rights of immigrants†. The protesting in SFSU was the longest lasting student protest. Their cries for â€Å"we want the puppet! † meant they wanted to discuss ethnic studies with S. I. Hayakawa who did not rally with the students even though he was Asian American. These students were subject to police violence, who went into the cafeterias to harass and attack the students. At Valley State University, Latino students with the black students protested in order to have more representation in and open up classes for Chicano studies and Black studies. So what role does race really play in all of this? We know that even if it’s not about race, it’s always about race. You can say that the student protests were all about race. When you ask people about which â€Å"race† they are, one normally gets a response like, asian, black, white, or so on. The two schools of thought, Primordialism and Instrumentalism, are opposing forces in which the former believes that â€Å"races existed, that races are biologically determined and distinct from one another. † The latter believes â€Å"race as a man-made, human created reality. It is an instrument that was constructed sociohistorically in order to allocate resources†. An outcome of the struggle for ethnic studies is that it challenged what the racial norm really was. By fighting for their rights, the protestors inadvertently chipped away at what really defines race; â€Å"a racist invention† to divide and allocate resources’. But can we really ignore that our race has nothing to do with our genetic makeup and the way we look? Discriminatory and prejudiced behavior towards minorities was the cause of the student unrest, as well as gaining support from non-ethnical students and community. Jesus Rodriguez realized â€Å"people can be so quick to attach certain characteristics to a person’s race†. The characteristics we attach to minorities are they’re lazy, they don’t want to leave the bottom, they’re slow learners, etc. With this in mind, white people in power discriminated these minorities, saying they don’t belong in their universities. Many white people believed in the status quo or race at the time and opposed the ethnic protestors. But what about everyone else that eventually sided with the protestors? Especially during the 60’s and 70’s, people began to fight for each other’s rights. The division between races between people were lessening, and the thought of a human race were expanding. They fought for their own rights and they fought for each other’s rights, because they realized all minorities at the time were going through the same struggle. † I believe that it is important for every American to know their history, even if it has nothing to do with their color or ethnicity: since events such as the Third World Strike influenced some of your fellow Americans, these same events indirectly influenced you as well†. Where would we be without ethnic studies today? Without the efforts and sacrifices of those student protesters, someone like me might not even appreciate and understand the struggle that so many went through. Little Princes Essay If one were to take a survey and ask people around a single question like, â€Å"How was your day? † â€Å"Good†, can be the most popular answer one would hear in response. One would wonder how many of them, really had a satisfactory day. Many people like to stay comfortable in their daily routine and prefer not to change it. However, one can forget that every day and every second of today counts and leaves a mark for tomorrow. What makes the difference in moments are the ones who make it count. Mary Kay, a successful businessperson classifies people in three different categories: â€Å"Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened. † Connor Grennan, the author and narrator of Little Princes, is a good example of a man making things to happen. In the beginning, the reader meets a less mature and self-centered Grennan. Despite the risk of joining a volunteer program during the country? s civil war, he searches for an adventure different from his routine life. The author? character transition throughout the book encourages readers to become a generation that makes things happen—a generation that expresses love, fuels hope, and dreams of a better tomorrow. Grennan? s attitude about volunteering changed as he faced reality in Nepal. In the beginning, the idea of volunteering seemed a perfect way to begin an adventure. His first thoughts about the volunteer service focused on making himself seem altruistic. With this experience, Grennan says that he â€Å"would squash any potential criticism†; he saw this planned three-month journey as his ticket to balance any other life decisions in the future. 7) Moreover, as we see him immerse in a different culture, Grennan? s strategy of survival urged him to become close to the families and embrace their culture. We see his character change as he expresses every experience from having his first meal based on rice and lentils and without using utensils, to learning a squat position to use the bathroom. Although it was only the beginning, we started to see a character that was willing to confront his barriers and come out of his comfort zone. His challenge arrived when he walked across the gate to the orphanage. Grennan became self-conscious of being well prepared and states that it â€Å"seemed ludicrous† to be a volunteer in the orphanage (Grennan 16). At that moment, he could not think of a skill in him when working with kids â€Å"other than the ability to pick up objects from the floor† (Grennan 16). He decided not to waste time wondering about the fact as he was already there. He compared his situation as if he were in Spain during the running of the bulls. This refers to what he does, must be done without over-thinking and reacting quickly. His first experience at the orphanage changed his assumptions about volunteer work. While Grennan continues to involve himself as a volunteer in Little Princes, we sense his expression of emotions, concerns, and joy with these orphans and the Nepalese community. He feels the pain they go through and takes them to the hospital. Grennan takes the word â€Å"brother† very seriously and behaves like a protective old brother to them. When he discovers the truth about the supposed orphans who are actually trafficked children, Grennan is heartbroken. As their ? older brother? , he is concerned for the kids. Later, he realizes that even the other volunteers have not taken any action to help the children. The readers start to see an emergence of leadership from Grennan. Grennan and his friend found a mother of two orphans; they reunited them to their mother as they planned trips to the town where she was staying. Meanwhile, Grennan found seven more kids living there with this mother and survived in extremely poor conditions. He wanted these seven kids to be in a safer place and there is where his mission began. In his first three-month period, he realizes these kids mean more to him. Grennan mentions, â€Å"If walking into the responsibility of caring for eighteen children was difficult, walking out on that responsibility was almost impossible†(p. 54) the meaning of this responsibility is that he wants the kids to get a better life. He cannot finish his work as a simple volunteer when he knows that these kids have a family. He commits himself to the promise of coming back for the children. Grennan becomes an example to these actions as he starts to look for a safer place for these kids. He knocks on every door for help and even he finds many corrupt situations as he digs into the story. When he finally thinks he has found an organization to rely on, everything becomes bad because Golkka, the trafficker finds about Grennan intentions and takes the kids away. In this situation, we see a character that not only tries but also lives with honor. Though he has failed to keep his promise the first time, he refuses to give up. Like in the beginning, he could have acted quickly and taken a plane back to Nepal but he realizes that this time he needed to plan and have a secure place for the kids. His only choice was to open an organization. Again, Grennan tells us about his lack of skills when he says, â€Å"I had no idea how to start a nonprofit organization† (p. 104). In this passage when Grennan recognizes his weaknesses we can identified to those times that we faced obstacles and fear of not knowing what to do. He sets an example to everyone as he becomes eagerly and attained to complete this mission. After some research and advice from his peers, he was able to start. Grennan mentions how desperate he was and how he could not sleep nor relax because the idea of the kids being in danger stressed him. The idea of rescuing the kids seemed like a dream at the beginning and became a challenge. Besides his mature character, we see a man who now acts selfless as he chooses to give himself to this purpose. It seemed ridiculous to him in the beginning because he thought he could have been spending time with friends and meeting girls. Then, Grennan realized that he is doing something that gives him meaning in his life. In the meantime, he has found real friends that encourage him. Connor Grennan reminds us that extraordinary things happen when we unite. Working together has helped and encouraged Connor to continue his nonprofit organization. He has his friend Farid, and finds other networks of friends that can help him economically and emotionally. During his time at home, Grennan gets attention from the media and manages to become a recognized organization. Thanks to a brave man like Connor Grennan, many kids have new lives. We see a man who is persistent, who constantly plans what his next move is. When he comes back to Nepal, every day he insists to look for the children. As he starts to find them, he feels satisfied and happy for the kids. When hard times come, he has his friend Liz who is now a companion. She gives him messages of hope and love. When he goes to the mountains to go look for the families of the children in Little Princes he gets hurt and in poor conditions to continue. Anyone who reads Little Princes, reflects at this point that Connor gives himself in this mission as he continues regardless of his illness. This part of the book is the most touching one as we experience victory when finding the families. Many of the challenges Grennan faced during this journey, allowed his personality to grow and become a responsible human being. Connor sends a more profound message to the people around him. His message to today’s generation is to start being compassionate about stopping corruption and injustice. Moreover, his message is for the coming generations to treasure every day and the people next to us. If there is something that can be challenging but can make a better person, situation, or society, he encourage us to try and do not give up. Grennan story tells us that one can have the whole world against us but when you know that you are capable of pressing forward or have somebody to believe in you, change can happen.

Carbonic Anhydrase The Fastest Enzyme Biology Essay Carbonic anhydrase, abbreviated as CA, is the first identified zinc containing enzyme, (CA; carbonate hydro-lyase, EC 4.2.1.1) It is an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible hydration and dehydration of carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid, bicarbonate ions and protons. Being one of the fastest enzyme known, it is believed that one molecule of CA can process one million molecules of carbon dioxide  per second. The basic molecular structure of CA includes specific amino acid threonine 199, glutamate 106, histidine 64 and histidine residues namely His 93, His 95, and His 118. The mode of regulation of CA is being inhibited by various medically prescribed substances that act as non competitive inhibitors, an example is Acetazolamide. CA plays a major key role in the fluid balance and regulatory of pH in different parts of the body thus, Mutation of this enzyme may lead to several diseases.(1) CARBONIC ANYHYDRASE THE START: Breathing, a fundamental function in life The air that we breathe in has some valuable oxygen, an important molecule wherein it helps the breakdown of fats and sugars in our cells. From the blood, oxygen diffuses then binds with the hemoglobin to be transported in the cells of our body. A by product of sugar and fat breakdown in cells is called Carbon dioxide CO2). It is a key metabolite in all living organism and it needs to be removed from our body. Carbon dioxide is diffuse out of the cells and transported in the blood in different ways to get to the lungs. CA is transported in numerous forms, mainly as bicarbonate, HCO3-. Bicarbonate is a CO2- with an attached OH group. When the HCO3- reaches the lungs, it is transformed back to a CO2, so it can be exhaled from the body. The conversion of bicarbonate to carbon dioxide facilitates its transport into the cell; while the conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate assists trap the carbon dioxide in the cell. This interconversion of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate develop at a slow physiological pH hence organism tend to produces an enzyme to hasten the process. This enzyme responsible for the speed up interconversion, which can be found in the red blood cells, is called carbonic anhydrase. Although the interconversion of bicarbonate to carbon dioxide can happen without the enzyme, CA can great increase the rate of the conversions up to a millions of fold. (2) STRUCTURE The CA molecule in general has ellipsoidal shape with the estimated dimension 4.1 x 4.1 x 4.7 nm. The active site is situated in a cavity having an approximately conical shape. The cavity is assessed 1.5 m wide at the way in and about 1.6 nm deep attaining almost the center of the molecule. The zinc ion is next to the peak of the cone and liganded into 3 imidazole groups. Figure 1. CA Structure (2) Figure 1. shows the structure of CA. Taken as a whole, is composed of 10-stranded anti-parallel beta-sheet enclosed with various elements of other secondary structure. The 6 alpha-helices and 10-beta sheets make up the secondary structure of carbonic anhydrase. The basic function of CA is basically to regulate the oxygen and carbon dioxide content of the blood that is needed in a human body. As the function suggests, the chemical structure of CA extremely lies with the presence of zinc that lies deep within its active site. Its common amino acid composition includes threonine, glutamate and histidine. The specificity of these 3 amino acids (threonine 199, glutamate 106, and histidine 64) plays a critical role in relation to the presence of zinc by charging it with a hydroxyl ion. The zinc cation is associated with three histidine residue protein backbone namely: His93, His95, and His118. As stated, zinc plays a major role in the reaction of CA. The zinc present in the active side of CA is being bound to water to be able to dissociate it into a proton and hydroxyl ion. The hydroxyl ion is being stabilized by the positively charged zinc, in this way; the hydroxyl ion is being prepared to attack the carbon dioxide inside the RBC. A closer look with CA can be seen in the figure below where the amino acid chains in the active site together with the zinc are evident. The role of the zinc basically includes the command of directional transfer of the bound hydroxyl to the carbon dioxide to be able to form bicarbonate ion. From the figure, it shows that the intermediate structure where the bicarbonate ion is still attached to the enzyme. The alanine replicated the side chain for amino acid 199 in this arrangement. Histidine 64 swings in the direction of and away from the zinc ion in every cycle of enzyme action although it is helping the zinc to recharge with a novel hydroxyl ion. (3) MECHANISM OF CATALYSIS The rate of catalysis of the CA is exceedingly pH dependent. It means that, the higher the pH, the catalysis is faster and as the pH reduces, the speed of the reaction falls down. The mean pH of this transition is near pH 7. (5) Figure 2. Mechanism of CA catalysis (6) Figure 2.0 shows the mechanism of CA catalysis. A zinc atom which is generally bound to four or more ligands differs in CA. In CA, three locations are occupied by imidazole ring of three histidine residues and an additional site is occupied by a water molecule. Thus the geometry form of the active site is tetrahedral. The zinc atom plays an important role in the mechanism of CA catalysis because it is responsible for the release of a proton H+ from a water molecule, which then generates a nucleophilic hydroxide ion. Then the carbon dioxide substrate will attach to the active site of the enzyme to react with the ion of hydroxide. The zinc-bound OH-  attacks the carbon of CO2  therefore converting it into a bicarbonate ion. This occurs since the zinc ion has the +2 charge, which attracts the oxygen of water. It then deprotonates the water, thus, converting it into a better nucleophile so that the newly converted hydroxyl ion can attack the carbon dioxide. After the nucleophilic att ack of zinc bound OH-, addition of water molecule displaces the bicarbonate ion from the metal ion. The CA is then ready for another cycle of catalysis. (7) KINETICS OF REACTIONS CA inhibitors are class of pharmaceuticals that control the activity of carbonic anhydrase. It is inhibited by two classes of compounds, a metal complex forming anions and others are isosteres and sulfonamides. Inhibitors ionize upon binding with the enzyme to give way an NH- group that relocates the zinc hydroxide ions and shares a hydrogen bond. There are roughly 25 clinically used CA inhibitors as a drugs. It is mainly established as antiglaucoma drugs, diuretics, hypotensive agents, anticonvulsants, anticancer agents, antiepileptics, with additional use in the management of duodenal and gastric ulcers, osteoporosis and neurological disorder. It cures glaucoma, altitude sickness, and some benign intracranial hypertension. Methazolamide treats glaucoma present in dogs which is called Open-angle glaucoma. While Topiramate which is a weak inhibitor, alleviate epilepsy, lennox gastuat syndrome and migraine headaches. And another CA inhibitor is the, Dorzolamide or sulphonamide which treat ocular hypertension or open-angele glaucoma. (10) CA activator regulates the proton transfer processes between the active site and the solvent system. It also binds at the entrance of the enzyme of the active site. One of the strong activator of CA is Histidine. Some amines and amino acids like l-Trp (tryptophan), l-Phe (Phenylalanine),  d-DOPA (D- 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine),  l-Tyr (Tyrosine), 4-amino-l-Phe also works as activators of CA. These CA activators are potentially target for drug development that can be useful as a derivative for the enhancement of synaptic efficacy which can be able to treat various conditions like, depression, alzheimers disease, ageing, spatial learning and memory therapy enhancer. (11) MODE OF REGULATION: Acetazolamide Inhibitor In case of excessive contents of CA in blood and peripheral areas of the lungs, proper regulation and inhibition is needed. Acetazolamide is a non competitive inhibitor that is effective in giving control with the catalytic reaction of the enzyme. This chemical complex substance is medically used o treat different conditions of moderate up to severe metabolic or respiratory alkalosis. Alkalosis may happen if excess CA is being reacted with the bicarbonate and carbon dioxide ions in the RBC, causing extreme absorption of bicarbonate thus giving the erythrocyte more basicity rather than having enough and sufficient pH level. Acetazolamide action is explained by interfering with bicarbonate (HCO3-) reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby giving enough acidity in the RBC, and further results to alkalinizing the urine. The action of inhibition results further to decreased synthesis of aqueous humor of the eye and causes the lowering of intraocular pressure. The interaction of Acetazolamide with CA does not occur with the active site, only close or remote to the active site. The net effect of this inhibitor basically changes the shape of CA that obviously leads to the inability of the substrate to bind properly, results to no catalytic reaction. (12) CARBONIC ANHYDRASE IN HEALTH AND DISEASE: Carbonic Anhydrase is found in numerous places in the body, including in the cerebro-spinal fluid, cytosol of some cells and mainly in the red blood cells. Since CA generates and utilizes protons and bicarbonate ions, it plays a major key role in the fluid balance and regulatory of pH in different parts of the body. Absence or mutation of the CA enzyme may lead to several diseases.  Also, CA inhibitor contributes to several treatments of diseases. One of the linked diseases of CA is the Osteopetrosis with cerebral calcification and renal acidosis. It is a syndrome deficient with CA in the body commonly called as Marble brain disease. This happens because sulfonamide inhibitor of CA can produce metabolic acidosis and have shown that CA inhibitors blocks the parathyroid hormone-induced the release of calcium bone which causes bone resorption. And since CA is present in the brain and CA inhibitors inhibits the production of cerebral spinal fluid, mutation of CA lead to cerebral calcification. Other disease associated with the deficiency of specific type of CAIII is the Myastenia gravis. It is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that results to a weak muscle of a person. Defects in CA IV can cause retinitis pigmentosa, a degeneration of retinal photoreceptor, which a patient experiences night vision blindness and loss of midperipheral visual. (13) Glaucoma, a condition wherein a build up of fluid in the eyes occurs and this presses the optic nerve that caused damage, is treated with the use of CA inhibitors like acetazolamide, brinzolamide, dorzolamide, and methazolamide. These inhibitors lessen the amount of fluid in the eye rapidly by 40% to 60% thus lowering the pressure inside the eye of a person with glaucoma. It now lessens the risk of optic nerve damage which promote vision loss. But prolong use of this drug affects the same enzyme in the tissue and may lead to kidney and liver damage The CA also plays an important role in the secretion of acid through the catalyzed hydration of excreted CO2 in the stomach lining which is mainly responsible in digestion of food. It helps to make pancreatic juice alkaline and our saliva neutral. In summary, CA performs different role and functions at their specific locations. (14)

Gawain's Encounter with the Green Knight in the Green Chapel Even though little is known about the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it is considered to be one of the greatest romances of all time. The poem tells the story of one of Arthur's noblest and most courageous knights, Sir Gawain, who is in search of the Green Chapel: "Sir Gawain ingeniously combines two plots, common in folklore and romance, although not found together elsewhere: the beheading contest, in which two parties agree to an exchange of blows with a sword or an ax, and the temptation, an attempted seduction of the hero by a lady" (Norton 200). The poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight deals with important themes and ideas such as nobleness, chivalry, knighthood, Christian ideals, truth, temptation, and hunting among others. The poem is also a "study [of] how successfully Gawain, as a man wholly dedicated to Christian ideals, maintains those ideals when he is subjected to unusual pressures" (Norton 200). The poet effectively uses literary devices such as alliteration , rhyme, irony, metaphor, symbolism, and imagery to reinforce his ideas and themes. This passage of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight deals with Gawain's encounter with the Green Knight in the Green Chapel. The guide describes the Green Knight as a big, cruel, scary monster. He tells Gawain that because of his cruelty, no one wants to get in the vicinity of the Green Knight. He warns Gawain to not risk his life by going to the Green Chapel, and promises him that he will conceal everything. However, Gawain must face the Green Knight and face the hit, because he is noble, worthy, and courageous. He is not a coward. He says to the guide, "But though you never told the tale, if I turned back... ...reen belt has magical protection and can save his life. Gawain's failure shows that he too is human and has faults. Examples of this can be seen in spanking, harsh reprimanding or even ignoring the child’s behaviors. By using negative reinforcement, the parents are unknowingly strengthening the prevalence of these behaviors, and therefore, the risk of these types of activities to continue through adolescence is also heightened (Patterson, 1982).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Children who tend to not comply with authority in infancy have a greater chance of having an aggressive temperament in adolescence (Kolvin, Nicol, Garside, Day & Tweedle, 1982; Olweus, 1980; Webster-Stratton & Eyberg, 1982).
